The ‘Gruen’ name came into use around the turn of the 20th century, no more additions son, sons or even the for many totally unknown initials DGS (Dietrich Gruen & Sons) mainly found on pocket watches. Gruen was one of the first companies to produce wristwatches in 1908, jet with very little success for the male population as they were considered too feminine and frumpish. Unimaginable, almost laughable as is has become the most worn accessory man has and probably ever will wear.
Many might recognize the Gruen brand especially for its doctors-watches, and small Art Deco watches in fantastic shapes etc. not so much for their automatic wind watches, so you could say this is a rather unique watch.
Even though the headquarters of Gruen Watch Company were located in the USA, the movements were all imported from Switzerland, jet they seem to have produced 17 and 21 jewels movements in the USA but this attempt was very short-lived.
Though the movements were imported from Switzerland the casing and fine tuning took place in the USA.
The 460SS caliber is a Breguet hairspring bumper automatic which was introduced in 1950 by Gruen as their very first automatic, hence the date of this beauty.
Just check out the perfectly rounded case made of Guildite metal alloy, adorned with huge long faceted shape lugs.
The original dial has platinated to a warm honeycomb colored over the years, the luminous numerals and hands have also become a deeper shade as has the red second hand.
We added a simple animal friendly moss green canvas strap to top it off
