This fabulous trench watch from Longines, was retailed by Mappin.
Mappin refers to the prestigious London jeweler, Mappin and Webb. Mappin and Webb was a luxurious British jeweler with roots dating back to 1775.
Trench watches, early wristwatches or wristlets as they were called in those days were invented during the first World War, as soldiers needed to be able to tell the time at a glance.
Trench watches look similar to packet watches, but a tad smaller en with wire lugs.
The solid silver case is signed AB - Arther Baume who was director of Longines in the UK. The hallmark N dates the watch to 1928, and the oval shape with u inside is the London mark for foreign made silver, which was used from 1906 on. The case has a hinged, and has an inner dust cover, both are signed. The email dial reads Mappin though rather fainted, the enamel is unblemished and the lume on the Arabic numerals and hands has nicely aged to warm bronze/olive shades. The watch carries a Longines 13.34 caliber Swiss manual wind movement this caliber was in use from 1910 to the 1930’s. Beautiful movement, check out the photos. The original crown is an onion-style, which is common shape on trench watches.
Imagine looking this good after 95 years!
