The German Dietrich Gruen emigrated to America mid-19th century, worked as an apprentice in Swiss factories, for jewelers and watchmakers till he finally received recognition with his improved safety pinion for which he received a patent in 1874.
In 1876 he went in partnership with W.J. Savage, the economic depression came and went as did the partnership.
In 1894, Gruen and his son started ‘D. Gruen & Son’, within a few years recalled D. Gruen & Sons. And as if that wasn’t confusing enough the first pocket watches were brought out under the name ‘DGS’, many didn’t have a clue it was from Gruen.
In the early 1900s they started using the name Gruen on their watches.
Gruen was based in the USA but considered Swiss because of the use of Swiss made movements.  

This model Gruen Guild is often described as ‘doctors watch’, but it isn’t, although the second hand has an excellent function in reading the 60 seconds, due its center position. From approximately 1925 - 35 Gruen made adorable fine ornated watch cases, they were not only functionable and fashionable but also a pure gem to look at, as is this beauty.
